Immediate aphthous ulcer treatment

WHAT ARE APHTHOUS ULCERS?

Aphthous ulcers, sometimes referred to as canker sores, are round, reddened, swollen sores inside the mouth. They may become elevated and burst, obtaining a grey or yellow-white membrane surrounded by a red lining. The sores are usually small, measuring less than 0.5 cm in diameter, but sometimes grow larger.

WHAT CAUSES THEM?

Aphthous ulcers are usually caused by trauma, including burns, cuts, or other abrasions. However, they sometimes appear without trauma, and in these cases, it is not known what causes the ulcers. They may be related to immune system conditions, such as ulcerative colitis, HIV, autoimmune disorders and Crohn’s disease.

HOW ARE APHTHOUS TREATED?

Our staff will immediately attend to your aphthous ulcers, providing pain relief and helpful advice. Oftentimes, treatment may involve avoiding abrasive, spicy or acidic foods. Proper nutrition can also prevent aphthous ulcers, as deficiencies in vitamins and minerals have been linked to an increase in their appearance.
